Rules - FLAG AND BENDING RACES

Rules of racing as agreed to by the Southern Highlands Show Societies’ Union.

 FLAG RACE:

ü      There will be a cask and five pegs with detachable flags on each.

ü      Distance between pegs to be 18ft and from the cask to the first peg 27ft.

ü      Spacing between lines of pegs to be 36ft and there be no limit to the lines of pegs used.

ü      The cask to be a peg with a drum attached at the top to collect the flags.  Height of pegs when driven into the ground to be 5 ft.

ü      Each competitor must take the farthest peg first.

ü      If a competitor knocks down cask he is to re-erect it before continuing.

ü      Should the competitor fail to lodge any flags in the cask he must dismount and pick up the flag, remount replace the flag in the cask and finish.

ü      Each competitor must keep to his own line of pegs.  A line of demarcation will be drawn or shown 18ft on each side of each line of pegs and each competitor must keep within these lines.  Crossing these lines will mean disqualification.  Should a competitor while crossing these lines interfere in any degree with another line of pegs, another competitor or their horse, the heat/semi final in which the infringement occurs will be stopped as speedily as possible and rerun, but the competitor causing the infringement will be automatically disqualified.

ü      Should any owner have more than one horse in the final, he is to provide another rider.

ü      The rider of the first horse past the winning post will be declared the winner, only when he is mounted on his horse, has the five flags in the cask and has completed the course in accordance with these rules.

ü      If, in the event of all competitors in the final being disqualified for infringements of these rules, the final must be rerun to determine a winner and placegetters.

BENDING RACE:

ü      There will be five pegs.

ü      The distance between the start line and the first peg will be 27 ft and between pegs 18 ft.  Spacing between the lines of pegs to be 36 ft and there will be no limit to the lines of pegs used.

ü      Each competitor must leave the first peg on his or her right.

ü      Each competitor must keep to his or her own line of pegs.  Crossing through other lines will mean disqualification.

ü      Knocking any peg down will mean disqualification.

ü      Only winners of heats eligible to compete in the semi finals. Should any owner have more than one horse in the final, they are to provide another rider.

ü      Should any owner have more than one horse in the final, they are to provide another rider.

ü      The rider of the first horse past the winning post will be declared the winner, only when mounted on the horse, all pegs in their line are standing, and they have completed the course in accordance with these rules.

ü      If, in the event of all competitors in the final knocking down their pegs, the final must be re-run to determine the winner.
