SOWING
Start preparing for Autumn sowing by following some simple steps:-
1. SOIL TEST:
With high fertilizer prices, a soil test will identify the product/s and rate/s required to maximize yield. It will also determine if lime or dolomite are required.
2. GRAZE: Use a high stocking rate on selected paddocks so that thay can be ploughed or direct drilled easily. It also makes economic sense to use feed on these paddocks instead of wasting it. Use urea blocks or Molafos to encourage grazing if necessary.
3. SPRAY:
Spray out with a Roundup mix (see Bryn for recipes) well before sowing to conserve moisture
4. LIME/DOLOMITE:
Spread if soil test report recommends to do so. Do this before ploughing or direct drilling to improve incorporation into the soil.
5. PLOUGH:
If necessary
6. SPRAY:
One day before sowing spray with a Roundup mix or Revolver (Spray seed). Revolver is preferred as it kills seedlings and mature plants. Add some insecticide (eg. Dimethoate) to kill insects that will eat your young crop or pasture seedlings.
7. SOW:
Use a species or mix of species that suits the chosen paddock. Species selection is based on factors such as soil type, soil depth, soil fertility, soil pH, altitude and aspect.

Get us to prepare a paddock budget to plan your pasture renovation programme.

SEED
Calculate your seed requirements now. Whether it be oats, triticale, winter wheat, annual ryegrass, Italian ryegrass or pasture, seed will be at a premium this season. Paddock budgets can help to determine what to sow based on the total cost ie. Ploughing, sowing seed, lime, fertilizer, herbicide and insecticide.
Trial results have shown that sowing short term ryegrass pastures is more profitable than retaining old pasture or sowing perennial pasture, based on total cash flow and allowing for capital costs, salvage values, depreciation and inflation.
With the extremely high costs of seed oats, and the other cereals this season, short term ryegrass  pastures will be even
more attractive than ever.
Based on Taralga Rural trials in 2007, seed oats would have to be $350 incl GST to justify using oats over Winterstar.

WEEDS
Bracken—Spray bracken now while it is fresh and growing rapidly. Product of choice is Metsulfuron with Penatra (wetter). Remember to do a follow up spray of bracken after the autumn break for effective control.
Blackberry, Eucalypts & Other woody weeds
Spray now. The product of choice is Grazon Extra which is the old Grazon DS (300g/L Triclopyr, 100g/L Picloram) with a new molecule, Aminopyralid, at 8g/L. The effect of the Aminopyralid is that it gives Grazon Extra added residual properties ie. It kills the weeds for longer.

Animal Health

SHEEP DRENCH

Use a triple combination drench such as Ancare’s new “Hatrick” as your first summer drench if you have not yet done one. Triple or double combinations, such as Switch or a Levamisole/Rametin mix, are effective second summer drenches. Effective summer drenching reduces the worm burden inside the sheep as well as reducing worm egg numbers on the pasture going into Autumn, with the result being lower worm burdens and therefore, more productive animals next winter.

With the mild and predicted stormy weather, beware the Barbers Pole worm. If possible, do a faecal egg count to determine the worm burden on your sheep.

Capsule weaners to set them up to life.

CATTLE DRENCH

Determine if weaners & yearlings require a drench by doing a faecel egg count. If the count is high, a culture will determine the worms present, allowing for a better product choice. Dectomax is an excellent product for use in young cattle due to its effectiveness against Cooperia. Where Cooperia is not present, Eprinex is a good choice and if fluke are present, Genesis Ultra injectable is the product of choice due to its low ESI. To arrange a worm test, sheep or cattle, speak to Bryn.

BLOWFLIES

There is a large range of products available for the prevention and treatment of flystrike. For prevention use products such as Clik, Cyrazin and Extinosad. For treatment, use products such as Extinosad, KFM and Defiance S.

PINK EYE

Due to the dust, pinkeye will be a problem earlier this season. We have in stock pinkeye spray, powder and patches, plus vaccine which can be used to prevent pinkeye.

COMPUDOSE

Implant steer calves at marking with compudose. Compudose contains a naturally occurring hormone found in all mammals, including cattle and humans. Compudose is ideal for use in young growing cattle. It maximizes growth rates in steers in all pasture situations. Compudose increases profitability by increasing beef production. The weighted average of 134 trials over 20 years shows that cattle treated with compudose have a 15.8% weight gain advantage compared to non-treated cattle.

SUPPLEMENTS

Utilize tall, stalky grass by providing supplements.

We stock a large range of blocks from 7% urea to 30% urea in 15kg, 40kg and 100kg (depending on type). We also have a good supple of Molafos liquid feed.
